Tai Chi and the Martial Arts
The origins of Tai Chi lie in the Chinese internal martial arts systems. Around 1920-1930 one of the members of the Yang Family, Yang Cheng Fu, adapted the original forms and started teaching Tai Chi to the public for its great health benefits. This is now the reason why many people now practice Tai Chi.
The martial side of Tai Chi is an option after you have practised the health side of it for some time. It is a feature of some advanced classes and workshops. Beginners’ classes do not include any martial activity and are focussed on the health and balance aspects of Tai Chi.
The Thursday Self Defence class includes...
• Form applications
• Parter work with gloves, mitts, shields, body and head armour
• Push hands
• Da Lu
From time to time I also run specialised one-day weekend workshops on the martial aspects of Tai Chi.
